Kristi Noem is replaced as Homeland Security Secretary.

Pres. Trump has replaced Homeland security Sec. Kristi Noem with Oklahoma Sen. Markwayne Mullen.

Kristi Noem has been under political pressure due to several controversies involving immigration enforcement, spending decisions, and congressional scrutiny.

  1. Immigration enforcement incident

A fatal incident involving immigration enforcement agents triggered protests and raised questions from lawmakers about the use of force and whether the Department of Homeland Security has been fully transparent about what happened.

  2. Border security advertising campaign

Noem has faced criticism over a large DHS advertising campaign promoting border security that featured her prominently. Some members of Congress are questioning the cost and the process used to award the contracts for the campaign.

  3. Congressional oversight and hearings

During congressional hearings, lawmakers have pressed her about how DHS monitors protest activity and immigration enforcement actions. These exchanges have raised broader concerns among critics about transparency and oversight.

  4. Political pressure and investigations

As a result of these issues, Noem is facing increased political pressure from some lawmakers, including calls for investigations and greater accountability regarding her leadership of the department.

Over the last two days, she has testified on Capitol Hill that Trump approve the $220 million advertising campaign featuring her. That campaign was awarded to people closely associated with Noem and the Republican Party. There is also the spending on planes which has caught the ire of both sides of the aisle especially, since the administration started off focuses on cost-cutting (DOGE).

It is likely the tip of the iceberg, but my guess is Noem will now become the “fall gal” to blame, and that if things do progress legally against Noem (for perjury?), Trump would pardon her.

Nevertheless, Trump has not cut bait fully of Noem. He is moving her to be the special Envoy for Shield of Americas, which is a new initiative.

About Markwayne Mullen:

Markwayne Mullin is a Republican U.S. senator from Oklahoma who has served in the Senate since January 2023. Prior to that, he represented Oklahoma’s 2nd congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2013 to 2023. He won a special election in 2022 to fill the Senate seat vacated by longtime Senator Jim Inhofe.

Mullin was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and is a member of the Cherokee Nation, making him one of the few Native American members of the U.S. Senate. Before entering politics, he ran his family’s plumbing business, worked as a rancher, and even competed in mixed martial arts (MMA) earlier in his life.

Politically, Mullin is considered a conservative Republican and a strong supporter of former President Donald Trump. In Congress, he has focused on issues such as energy policy, national security, deregulation, and reducing government spending. He has developed a reputation for being outspoken and combative in congressional hearings and public debates.

Mullin lives in Westville, Oklahoma, with his wife Christie, and they have six children.
